Hello. Today we are going to talk about autism.
People started using the word "autism," about 100 years ago. It comes from the Greek word "autos" meaning "self." The term describes conditions in which a person has a problem creating social interactions. As a consequence such person is isolated from other people.
A psychiatrist from Switzerland, Eugen Bleuler, was the first person to use the term. He started using it around 1911 and described a group of symptoms of schizophrenia. Only in the 1940s American doctors began to use the word "autism" to describe symptoms of children who had emotional or social problems. Leo Kanner, a doctor from Hopkins University (the USA), used it to describe symptoms of some children he treated. They were withdrawn and closed from other children in the group. At about the same time, Hans Asperger, a scientist in Germany, identified a similar condition that's now called Asperger's syndrome. The children who he worked with weren't very open, didn't talk very much and had problems with finding friends.
Until the 1960s autism and schizophrenia were connected together. Then scientists realized that this is a completely different kind of mental condition. In the 1970s researchers suggested that autism is not one sickness but a whole spectrum of syndromes. Today we know much more about autism and Asperger's syndrome and can help children who suffer from such sicknesses better.
